Max: 4G prototypes reach blistering speeds

via New Scientist:

"In experiments, prototype phones were used to view 32 high definition video streams, while travelling in an automobile at 20 kilometres per hour. Officials from NTT DoCoMo say the phones could receive data at 100 megabits per second on the move and at up to a gigabit per second while static. At this rate, an entire DVD could be downloaded within a minute. DoCoMo's current 3G (third generation) phone network offers download speeds of 384 kilobits per second and upload speeds of 129 kilobits per second."

Max want.

I'm confused. They can do this on a cell phone but not on a computer? Or am I mistaken that that's faster than a cable modem?

Ah, yes. Cable modem. I just read up on this the other day, I'm studying for my Network+ certification. BTW, I just got my ITIL certification - Yay me!

Anyway, I don't remember the exact numbers, but the protential through put on a cable modem is huge. Like 100+ Mbps. Now, that's Million Bits Per Second, vs. what they are talking about on these phones, kbps, Kilo Bits or thousands of bits per second.

Cable is a shared system. Everyone in your neighborhood is on the same loop, sharing the bandwidth. Early in cable modem history, subscribers could see each other, like they were all on the same LAN. Bad security! Even now, someone with a little knowledge could look at someone else's computer who's on the same loop. A firewall will help a lot to prevent that.

Since everyone shares the same loop, cable companies regulate the amount of bandwidth you get. This way, someone doesn't start running an ISP out of their house and take away the bandwidth from everyone else in the area. Typically, cable bandwidth has been 3 Mbps download and 256 kbps upload. Comcast is making a big deal that they have gone to 4 Mbps down and 384 kbps up. Depending on usage and local equiptment, you can get higher rates, but not by much. Checkout this article here.

So, no, your cable modem will be a lot faster than these phones. But, these phones are still pretty freakin' fast! This is seven 56k modem down and 2+ up - not bad for a phone.

I figure 2 of those 100 gig flash drive could be crammed together into basically the unlimate cell phone/pda device.

This is the exact kind of thing we have been waiting for. Low cost, high speed, lots of memory - you will need a hefty processor and lots of battery time, but it's gold beyond that. Total desktop replacement that fits in your pocket.

Of course, this is something DoCoMo is testing. In Japan. This means we won't see anything like this in the US for another decade or so.

Yeah. Probably.

It would have been pretty, though.
